Draft External Investigations Guidelines – now open for feedback

Date posted:

The NSW Ombudsman has released a new In Focus paper to help support NSW government departments, agencies, local councils and community service providers with external investigations.

Titled Managing the Integrity and Quality of an External Investigation, the latest edition of In Focus seeks to provide guidance around the use of external investigators to maximise outcomes and minimise risks.

To complement this work, we have developed a set of draft guidelines that provide more detailed, practical advice on each stage of the external investigation process. These guidelines are intended to strengthen agency capability, support consistent practice, and promote good administration across the sector.

We are now seeking feedback from agencies and stakeholders on the draft guidelines to ensure they are clear, practical and fit for purpose.

Read the Draft External Investigations Guidelines here.

We will be accepting feedback until 17 October 2025. Following this review process, the finalised Guidelines will be made publicly available on our website.

Please send your feedback to: IMPBoperations@ombo.nsw.gov.au
