Aboriginal Outcomes Strategy focus area 2 (out-of-home care) – were the targets achieved?

The NSW Ombudsman, Paul Miller, has today tabled a report assessing the extent to which the State’s child protection department achieved its five-year strategy to reduce overrepresentation of Aboriginal children in out-of-home care (OOHC).

The NSW Department of Communities & Justice’s Aboriginal Outcomes Strategy 2017-2021 (AOS) set an over-arching goal of reducing the over-representation of Aboriginal children in OOHC, together with four specific targets directed toward that goal.

New report uses linked data analysis to better identify risk factors for early childhood mortality

A report tabled by the NSW Ombudsman today links perinatal (birth) records with the records of children who have died to better understand risk factors for early childhood mortality.

The report, titledEffects of perinatal conditions and local area socioeconomic status on early childhood mortality in New South Wales: linked data analysis, was prepared by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) for the NSW Child Death Review Team (CDRT), NSW Ombudsman.

A report by the NSW Ombudsman tabled today, has highlighted the importance of local councils having systems in place to ensure that public interest disclosures (PIDs) are encouraged, identified, and reported.

The report, titled Public Interest Disclosures Act 1994 Audit Report: Summary of Public Interest Disclosure Audits of 6 Local Councils, outlines the findings of audits conducted on 6 local councils under the Public Interests Disclosure Act 1994.
