New legislation gives police officers the power to require a person to remove a face covering, such as a helmet, mask, veil or niqab, in order to confirm that person's identity. Police can require removal of a face covering whenever they lawfully require a person to provide their identification details, for example, during a traffic incident. These new powers came into effect on 1 November 2011 and are set out in Part 3 Division 4 of the Law Enforcement (Powers and Responsibilities) Act 2002.
